AIM MyChron or Alfano — which is better?

Both are equal at the top of the field. AIM MyChron 5 is a bit more user-friendly (colour display, intuitive analysis with Race Studio 3), Alfano 6 is priced more attractively and popular in Europe. Sensor selection is comparable. Rule of thumb: for the first system stick to what your team-mates use — data sharing simplifies analysis.

What sensors do I need as a minimum?

Minimum for meaningful data analysis: RPM, exhaust gas temperature (EGT), water temperature, GPS (lap time + position). Extend with: wheel speed sensor (front, for slip detection), brake pressure, steering angle. Rule: better start with few sensors and learn to read them than have 10 sensors and use none of them.

How much data should I record per session?

Sampling rate 10–20 Hz sufficient for most channels — GPS 10 Hz, EGT 5 Hz, RPM 20 Hz. Higher rates (50/100 Hz) generate huge files without added value for the driver. Every session (heat) save separately with clear name: date + track + engine + tyre + weather.

Can I use my kart data logger in the car too?

Partly yes: AIM MyChron and Alfano 6 have Solo variants (Solo 2 DL / Alfano ADS) with car-suitable mounting. Sensors are different (car uses CAN bus, kart uses direct sensors). Better: for the car buy specific solutions (AIM Solo 2 DL, VBox).

Which laptop for karting data analysis?

Any modern Windows laptop (min. 8 GB RAM, SSD) is enough for Race Studio 3 or Alfano software. Full-HD screen recommended (14 inch or larger for graph reading). Mac only via emulation — not practical in the pits. Rugged notebooks (Panasonic Toughbook) unnecessary for hobby use, waste of money.

AIM or Alfano?
